Aliens Beware

Daniel X is back and a better alien hunter than ever!

Last September I was able to read the first book in the Daniel X series by James Patterson and got hooked. The Dangerous Days of Daniel X, told the story of a teen with secret powers who hunts aliens and protects the Earth. Think Men in Black meets Harry Potter! I was thrilled to hear that the 2nd book, Daniel X: Watch the Skies, was going to be available soon and that I could get an early copy to review.

As both a bestselling author and the father of an eleven-year-old son, James Patterson truly believes that the best way to get people excited about reading is to give them books they'll love. That is basically exactly what we discussed this past week at school as we brainstormed ways to encourage a love of reading in our students. My principal was saying how she doesn't believe that a person, whether child or adult, can't stand reading, but rather they haven't yet found the perfect book. It's exciting to know that Patterson believes this also and is using his talent to help address this problem especially with reluctant young male readers.

On July 27th, Patterson's second novel in the series, Daniel X: Watch the Skies will be on the bookshelves. In this story, an evil outer-space outlaw named Number Five comes to a small town on Earth intending to produce an intergalactic version of "Survivor," with a twist: every human in the town will be eliminated. Daniel finds himself on a quest to stop Number Five and his alien crew, not just to save the world, but to save himself.

Patterson is a wonderful story teller and has a talent for keeping the story moving right along. One of my absolute favorite parts of the Daniel X books are the extremely short chapters, I'm talking like 3 or 4 pages at the most. Last year, I shared these books with a couple boys in my 3rd grade class who I thought would enjoy the content and one of the first things they looked at was how long the chapters were. It was perfect for enjoying in school because they could quickly finish up a chapter and feel that they were completing the book. Of course the special powers, aliens, and good vs. evil fights greatly appealed to them as well.

This year I'm moving up to 5th grade and I already have these books on my "favorite books" shelf. Each week I try to do a quick book talk about some books I think my students may enjoy and then sit them in a special place for the students to read if they are interested. I can't wait to hear what my boys think about Daniel X!

DISCLOSURE: Thank you MotherTalk for sending me a free copy of this book to enjoy and review.

I LOVE James Patterson books. I haven't read his books in a few years though ... once I'm through the Harry Potter books I'm going to catch up on all the James Patterson books I've missed out on. I really enjoyed his books on the children who were altered and had wings.
