NetSmartz and Internet Safety for Teens

In the techie world that we live in children are often more computer savvy than some adults. This is true for both of my kids. Dylan, 8, has been on the Internet with Webkinz, ToonTown, Poptropica, and other sites. He even has his own blog although updated very infrequently! Zoe also has her own Webkinz log in, enjoys Disney.com, and the Precious Girls Club.

As they use the Internet more and more, I can't help but begin to think about the danger lurking there. While my children do not go to sites that host chats, yet, I am already wondering how to handle it when they begin to become interested in them.

NetSmartz, a leading online resource of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has developed a website designed to educate, engage, and empower kids as Internet users. They offer information and support for parents, educators, law enforcement, teens, and kids. They even have a special area for teens where they show videos and comics featuring teen characters that discuss the harm people can cause on the web and also how it can be used in a positive way to empower teens. The videos go over topics such as social networking, cyber-bullying, and offline consequences. The cartoon videos also simulate interviews with teens talking about their Internet use. It is all done in a very hip and informative, but not lecturing, way.

So if you need help stimulating that discussion about Internet safety, don't forget to check out NetSmartz!
